Everything you need to know about Waxing
It’s been a long winter but summer is just around the corner! If hair removal is something you like to do in the warmer months, there’s never been a better time to start looking into waxing courses. Whether you’re considering your first-ever wax or you’re a seasoned pro looking for tips, let’s take some of the mystery out of the waxing process.
What Is Waxing?
Waxing is a semi-permanent hair removal method that involves applying wax to the skin and removing it quickly to pull hair out from the root. This results in smoother skin that lasts far longer than shaving, typically 3 to 6 weeks depending on your hair growth cycle.
Does Waxing Hurt?
One of the most common concerns when it comes to waxing is how painful it will be. This depends on a few factors, including your personal pain tolerance and where you are in your cycle. However, the biggest influence on how much it hurts is where you’re getting waxed. Leg Waxing will hurt less than intimate waxing, so if you’re just starting out it’s a good idea to start with a less sensitive area first.
Your first wax is usually your most painful, so it’s worth considering waxing courses, which make your skin less sensitive over time. At Beauty Secrets, we’re offering a Waxing Pick & Mix, with 50% off your third area. This includes leg waxing and intimate waxing, allowing you to get completely ready for summer in just one session! How Long Should Hair Be Before Waxing?
For the wax to grip effectively, hair should be about ¼ inch long which is roughly the length of a grain of rice. If it's too short, the wax might not be able to remove it; too long, and the experience might be more uncomfortable. If in doubt, don’t trim it yourself, just let your waxing professional handle it.
How Often Should You Wax?
Most people rebook their waxing appointments every 3 to 5 weeks. Consistency is key! Booking waxing courses has huge benefits such as your hair growing back finer and sparser, reducing your discomfort and keeping your skin smoother for longer. Eventually, many clients find they need to wax less often because the hair grows back more slowly.
Can I Wax At Home?
Yes, but it comes with caveats. Home waxing kits are available, but they can be messy, and improper technique may lead to bruising, skin irritation, or ingrown hairs. If you’re new to waxing or treating sensitive areas, it’s best to see a professional here.
Where Can I Get Waxed?
At Beauty Secrets, we offer waxing for a variety of areas. This includes leg waxing, arms, facial areas, waxing for men and intimate waxing.

How Can I Prepare For My Waxing Appointment?
Preparing properly can make your waxing experience smoother and less painful, here are a few tips! Exfoliate 24 hours before to remove dead skin and help prevent ingrown hairs. Avoid sun exposure or tanning beds at least 48 hours before. Don’t moisturise the day of your appointment as oil can interfere with the wax. Wear loose clothing to prevent irritation post-wax. Avoid caffeine and alcohol the day of your wax, as they can make skin more sensitive.
What About Waxing Aftercare?
After your wax, your skin will likely be a bit red or sensitive, this is totally normal and usually subsides within a few hours. To care for your skin post-wax make sure that you avoid hot showers, saunas, or swimming for 24 hours. After your wax, don’t exfoliate for at least 48 hours and wear breathable clothing to reduce friction. For long-term care after waxing, exfoliate a few times a week and moisturise daily to keep skin healthy and ingrown hairs at bay.
Is Waxing Suitable for Everyone?
Waxing is safe for most skin types, but there are exceptions. If you’re uncertain, give your local Beauty Secrets salon a call or contact us here. As a general rule, you should avoid waxing if you use retinoids or certain acne medications, have a sunburn or very sensitive skin or have an active skin infection or rash. Always disclose any medications or skin concerns to your waxing technician as a patch test may also be recommended.
Waxing doesn’t have to be scary or mysterious. Whether you’re prepping for your first appointment or a seasoned client who just has some questions, knowledge is power and smoother skin is totally within reach for summer!
